Lymphedema: Diagnosis and Treatment
Author: Lawrence L Tretbar
A comprehensive, evidence–based introduction to the area of lymphology, the book is directed mainly to the US audience and will appeal to an interdiscplinary field of health professionals. It describes the unique anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and the intimate relationship it shares with the venous system. It explores the differential diagnosis of the "swollen leg/arm", which is often the presenting problem to the health care professional. The necessity of history taking, physical examination and laboratory studies are noted. Treatment methods are described as an introduction and psychosocial and quality of life issues are explored in depth.
The book will appeal to primary care physicians whose cancer patients are sent to radiation oncologists (who themselves must be knowledgeable about possible lymphedema following treatment), to medical and surgical oncologists, as well as physical therapists, and every US medical school.

Reviewer:Vincent F. Carr, DO, FACP(Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)
Description:This book fills the need for a comprehensive text on lymphedema that describes the history, anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the lymphatic system of the human body. This will become a seminal work on a vexing and heretofore poorly understood organ system.
Purpose:The authors have drawn together a simple set of guidelines for treatment and management and produced a base of knowledge for medical professionals and patients alike. As this area is one of the least researched of organ systems, this is a necessary and timely effort. The authors have produced a reference for all who treat patients with these problems.
Audience:The book is primarily for medical and surgical specialists who are faced with the long term patient follow-up of congenital abnormalities, surgical results, and medical complications of disease. Clearly, in the current information age, it will be a book for patients who are looking for relief of their condition and understand that there is treatment available in specialized centers.
Features:A historical background begins the book, which is followed by the anatomy and physiology involved. A generous number of superlative color photographs illustrate various conditions and results after successful treatment. One of the major contributions to the literature is a comparison of the various classification systems of lymphedema; in particular, the utility of a clinical and laboratory staging system. This is an excellent discussion.
Assessment:This is a most important book that exquisitelyoutlines where the state of medicine is currently in the diagnosis and treatment of a frustrating chronic condition. It is a worthy addition to every surgical, general medical, and cardiovascular library. The authors are to be commended on a superb work.
