About the Author:
Marcia Zimmerman, MEd, CN, is an internationally known author, educator, and consultant to some of the country's leading nutrition and supplement companies

Library Journal

Most nutrition and diet books focus on calories, fat, fiber, or protein. Scientist and nutritionist Zimmerman here focuses on phytonutrients, plant-based chemicals that may help to prevent conditions such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, and that are also the pigments responsible for the color of fruits and vegetables. The book is self-described as "a new way of eating" for those who need to improve their diets but don't know where to begin; meals are created around colorful and animal foods, preferably those that contain zoonutrients, which are added secondarily. Three weeks worth of menu plans with appealing recipes for soups, entr es, salads, and breakfast shakes are included as well. Zimmerman stresses the use of organic foods and the importance of mindfulness in food preparation and eating, encouraging readers to savor their food both with their eyes and with their taste buds. Herbal Diplomats or Slow Down so I Can Tell You I Love You

Herbal Diplomats: The Contribution of Early American Nurses (1830-1860) To19th Century Health Care Reform and the Botanical Medical Movement

Author: Martha M Libster

During the early and mid-19th century, Americans not only explored their new found political and religious freedom, they experimented extensively with health freedom and self-care, in particular the use of healing herbs. The American Botanical Medical Movement of the 1830's - 1860's influenced emerging American culture and was a defining time in the nation's health care history; however the histories of the Botanical Movement have been written only of the male leadership. Herbal Diplomats is the first book to explore the healing and caring role of American women nurses during the Botanical Medical Movement. The contributions of three communities' nurses to the development of American botanical therapies are highlighted. Included are the Shaker infirmary/community nurses, the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) pioneer nurses and midwives, and the Daughters of Charity hospital nurses. This fascinating, descriptive history reveals the autonomy, herbal expertise, and cultural diplomacy of women nurses of the period.

Recipient of the prestigious 2005 Lavinia L. Dock Award for Exemplary Historical Research and Writing. Awarded by the AAHN (American Association for the History of Nursing)

Slow down, So I Can Tell You I Love You

Author: Tammy Young

In 1993, two of Tammy Young's children were diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), a chronic neurobiological condition that turned her family life into a daily struggle. None of the treatments or behavior modification she tried seemed to make a lasting difference, and like many parents of children with AD/HD, she began to feel hopeless...until she learned to live by a whole new philosophy.

Tammy had come to believe that there was something wrong with her children, that she needed to change them, to shape them into compliant "angels." But then she learned to see her children with new eyes. Instead of focusing on her own expectations and needs, she began to appreciate her children for who they were, and to honor and nurture their uniqueness. She calls her approach "Spiritual Parenting," and it was so successful in her own family that she now shares it with other parents.

In this compassionate, thoughtful book, Tammy describes frankly and courageously how she learned to let go of her disappointments, expectations, and assumptions before she could connect with her children. At the same time, she gives parents practical strategies for defining each child's personality in positive terms, as she learned to do with her own children. And she shows how to help children with AD/HD become responsible for their actions, overcome unacceptable behavior, and take control of their lives.

Healing Heartburn or Ayurveda

Healing Heartburn

Author: Lawrence J Cheskin

Few federal agencies have more extensive ties to the private sector than NASA. NASA's relationships with its many aerospace industry suppliers of rocket engines, computers, electronics, gauges, valves, O-rings, and other materials have often been described as "partnerships." These have produced a few memorable catastrophes, but mostly technical achievements of the highest order. Until now, no one has written extensively about them.

In NASA and the Space Industry, Joan Lisa Bromberg explores how NASA's relationship with the private sector developed and how it works. She outlines the various kinds of expertise public and private sectors brought to the tasks NASA took on, describing how this division of labor changed over time. She explains why NASA sometimes encouraged and sometimes thwarted the privatization of space projects and describes the agency's role in the rise of such new space industries as launch vehicles and communications satellites.

Nicholas Ferrentino

Healing Heartburn is informative, easy to read, and provides an excellent overview of the subject with significant detail of GERD and its related issues. I found the clinical case vignettes to be particularly helpful for the lay person or patient. I think this would be an excellent book to stock in physicians offices to be given to patients as a resource for information regarding this particular disease process.

Booknews

Written for the general reader, this book explains the basics of gastrointestinal reflux disease, identifies its symptoms, and discusses available treatments. It describes diagnostic tests, each step in treatment, the effectiveness of medications, and complications. Patient stories, illustrations, questionnaires, answers to common questions, and a list of resources are provided. The authors are affiliated with Johns Hopkins. Annotation c. Ayurveda: A Comprehensive Guide to Traditional Indian Medicine for the West

Author: Frank John Ninivaggi

Derived from prehistoric sages living in ancient India some 6,000 years ago, Ayurveda denotes life wisdom. The medical system of India, it is arguably the oldest medical tradition that exists. This book translates the Eastern wisdom into terms and concepts Westerners can understand. Ninivaggi presents the text with both scholarship and compassion. He explains how Ayurveda can promote physical and mental health by targeting threats ranging from acute and chronic stress, to pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, coronary artery disease, and diabetes. Practical, user-friendly nutritional guidelines for maintaining health and addressing health imbalances are given. The center of attention in Ayurveda is the person. The meaningfulness of a quality of life in the world is central. Living a quality life with others and in accord with nature--the environment at large--is emphasized. Health strategies are suggested for specific individual constitutional types, to prevent emotional distress, to treat illness, and to enhance optimal living. Avyureda has been handed down across millennia, virtually intact to the present day. It is a comprehensive way of living whose scope includes proactive health measures as well as integrated healing strategies for body, mind, and spirit.

Reflexology for Beginners or High Performance Beauty

Reflexology for Beginners: Healing Through Foot Massage of Pressure Points

Author: David Vennells

Reflexology: A Health-Promoting Massage Therapy that Anyone can Practice

A good foot massage is one of life's most satisfying pleasures. With a little bit of knowledge, it can also be one of the easiest and least invasive methods for treating specific ailments and promoting overall wellness.

By concentrating on the basics, Reflexology for Beginners allows anyone to practice and enjoy reflexology as quickly and easily as possible. The author's goal is, simply, to give you the power to effectively serve the health needs of yourself and others through this well-respected complementary therapy. Included in these pages are:

Over forty illustrations of techniques and pressure points Step-by-step instructions for beginning and full treatmentsThe fascinating history of reflexologyMental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of healingPreviously unpublished informationSeveral illustrative case histories

Author Biography: David Vennells (Manchester, England) is a Reiki practitioner and teacher. He first experienced Reiki after suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for four years. In a very short time Reiki greatly improved his mental and physical condition and general quality of life.

Library Journal

Llewellyn's "For Beginners" series aims to return the power of healing techniques to the people. Vennells has already written two volumes in the series, Bach Flower Remedies for Beginners and Reiki for Beginners. He experienced these therapies first as a patient, working to heal his chronic fatigue syndrome; he then became a practitioner and teacher. The current book discusses reflex locations, techniques, treatment sessions, and advice for the practitioner. There are over 40 line drawings, accompanied by clear directions. Vennells offers a philosophy of illness and healing cultivated in a Buddhist perspective. The only real drawback is the lack of stories to illustrate the author's points; the chapter titled "Case Studies" contains more testimonials and letters of encouragement from practitioners than true case studies. For large public libraries with extensive alternative health collections. Elizabeth C. Stewart, Portland, ME Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Curandero or Jump Off

Curandero: A Life in Mexican Folk Healing

Author: Eliseo Torres

Eliseo Torres, known as "Cheo," grew up in the Corpus Christi area of Texas and knew, firsthand, the Mexican folk healing practiced in his home and neighborhood. Later in life, he wanted to know more about the plants and rituals of curanderismo.

Torres's story begins with his experiences in the Mexican town of Espinazo, the home of the great curandero El Niño Fidencio (1899-1939), where Torres underwent life-changing spiritual experiences. He introduces us to some of the major figures in the tradition, discusses some of the pitfalls of teaching curanderismo, and concludes with an account of a class he taught in which curanderos from Cuernavaca, Mexico, shared their knowledge with students.

Part personal pilgrimage, part compendium of medical knowledge, this moving book reveals curanderismo as both a contemplative and a medical practice that can offer new approaches to ancient problems.

From Curandero

". . . for centuries, rattlesnakes were eaten to prevent any number of conditions and illnesses, including arthritis and rheumatism. In Mexico and in other Latin American countries, rattlesnake meat is actually sold in capsule form to treat impotence and even to treat cancer. Rattlesnake meat is also dried and ground and sprinkled into open wounds and body sores to heal them, and a rattlesnake ointment is made that is applied to aches and pains as well."

Chakras in Shamanic Practice: Eight Stages of Healing and Transformation

Author: Susan J Wright

NEW AGE / PERSONAL GROWTH

“Susan Wright’s creations epitomize the true meaning of magic. They take us to new levels of consciousness, empowering us to accomplish goals we previously only imagined, to realize our deepest dreams. Read, learn, enjoy--and shapeshift yourself and the world."
--From the foreword by John Perkins, bestselling author of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, Shapeshifting, and The World Is As You Dream It

The chakra system identifies eight centers in the psycho-anatomy of humans, each one associated with a different part of the physical or energy body. Susan J. Wright, a practicing shaman and Gestalt psychotherapist, uses her own life journey to show that each chakra also is linked to a different stage of emotional and spiritual development. In The Chakras in Shamanic Practice, she identifies eight key developmental stages of life, from birth to old age/death. Each of these life stages has various developmental challenges and potential traumatic events that will likely occur within our culture and affect the health and well-being of the individual.

Wright explains that life traumas experienced in particular developmental stages become lodged within the energy body as they cling to their corresponding chakra. By identifying and working with the chakra involved, a doorway can be opened to a world of transformative images, allowing powerful shamanic techniques to heal these psychic wounds. Providing both physical exercises and guided meditations that utilize the techniques of soul retrieval, working with power animals, and transcending trauma, Wright offers practitioners a way togather and nurture the fragmented parts of their energy body and lead themselves to physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

SUSAN J. WRIGHT, a practicing shaman and licensed massage therapist since 1981, is also certified as both a Gestalt psychotherapist and yoga teacher and is a licensed clinical social worker. She created and facilitates a shamanic training program at her healing center, Birth of Venus, in Mamaroneck, New York, where she integrates social work, psychotherapy, and shamanism with yoga, belly dancing, and craniosacral therapy and other bodywork techniques. She lives in Mamaroneck, New York.

May I Walk You Home or Relaxercise

May I Walk You Home?: A Guide to Sharing Christ's Love With the Dying

Author: Melody Rossi

Reach the Terminally Ill With the Good News

Melody Rossi saw God work in the hearts of three close family members who died within a span of twenty-eight months. When she had nearly given up hope that they might believe, she was amazed to find their hearts softened to the gospel message.

Melody learned that illness has a way of making a person hungry for the truth about spiritual matters. If your unsaved friend or family member is facing death, this encouraging book can help you share Christ in loving, natural ways. She shows how to:

Serve in ways that speak louder than words

Respond to signs of spiritual openness

Discuss matters of eternal importance

Cope with the ups and downs of this difficult time

Filled with hope, joy, and practical wisdom, May I Walk You Home? will lovingly prepare you to talk to family and friends about Jesus.

Debra Gaynor - readerviews.com

It is rewarding to know that Ms. Rossi used the knowledge she gained from the death of several loved ones to serve the Lord and assist others. I highly recommend this book to those working with Hospice, hospitals, nursing homes and those who know someone facing a terminal illness.

Patty Inglish

I liked this book, because the author uses real-life experiences with her parents and a stepparent through their dying months. She gives a candid portrayal of herself, accepting the tools of the journey after she has walked into it feeling unequipped. She writes about forming a support team that can help with prayer and practical duties as one walks with a dying person; and includes checklists and suggestions, poignant quotations, scripture, song lyrics, and her heart and belief.

This book will uplift anyone curious about transitioning out of this life. Teens and middle-schoolers need to be able to discuss it with a caring adult. (Patty Inglish, armchairinterviews.com)

A Chakra Kundalini Workbook or Shape Your Self

A Chakra & Kundalini Workbook: Psycho-Spiritual Techniques for Health, Rejuvenation, Psychic Powers & Spiritual Realization

Author: Jonn Mumford

By spending just a few minutes each day performing these Yoga techniques, men and women can create inner relaxation leading to better health, a longer life, and greater control over one's personal destiny. Tailored for the Western mind, here is one of the clearest, most approachable books ever on experiencing the incredible benefits of Yoga.

Christian Paaske

"A Chakra & Kundalini Workbook by Jonn Mumford is a rich well of tantric esoteric knowledge. The book is a practical guide to advanced techniques exploring particularly the chakras, but presented in an easy and accessible way. The book is a vastly expanded version of Jonn Mumfordґs first bestseller, Psychosomatic Yoga, which was translated into eight languages. Thirty years has passed between the two editions, and with the authors increased experience of yoga and western magic the result is a totally rewritten and greatly expanded book.
I read Psychosomatic Yoga, many years ago, and what impressed me was the authors ability to present simple yoga techniques, which at first glance looks simple, but has a powerful effects when understood and applied right. This is the quality of Jonn Mumford's work, his first hand knowledge from studying and living with Indian masters like Swami Satyananda and Swami Gitananda, and extracting the juice and essence of their teaching and serving it on a sliver platter. This is not for academic curiosity, but for the practitioner who wants effective tools for better health, less stress, more energy and "cleaner windows" to see oneself and the world through."

Publishers Weekly

Tennis legend Navratilova has won 20 Wimbledon titles and 58 Grand Slam titles, and at age 46, became the oldest Grand Slam winner ever. Now 49, she competes in tennis matches, skis, and plays hockey and basketball. It's no surprise, then, that she's always being asked, "How do you stay in such good shape? What's your secret?" The answers lie in a food and fitness plan that explores six areas of mind and body fitness, from thinking like an athlete (dream big, set high goals, push yourself, bounce back from defeat) to choosing organic foods (Navratilova is enamored of juicing; she provides recipes for fruit-and-vegetable drinks and meals in a 28-day plan). The book's exercise section includes photos of the author demonstrating workout moves and a list of "exercise toys" that keep fitness routines fun. It's fascinating (and motivating) to get the inside scoop on how an elite athlete trains-and struggles like the rest of us. Navratilova's coaching approach, characterized by supportive, encouraging exhortations ("Look at ability, not age" and "You are the benchmark of your own success"), will give struggling readers encouragement. Library Journal

Navratilova holds a record nine Wimbledon titles-not to mention 58 Grand Slam titles. At 48, she still plays tennis competitively in doubles at the Grand Slams and on the WTA Tour. Here, she presents her six-step program of natural foods and regular exercise for keeping fit, which emphasizes gradual changes that can be easily incorporated into daily life and the emotional support of friends and family. She particularly stresses freshly prepared natural foods and exercises that build core stability with cardiovascular conditioning. This well-presented plan will appeal particularly to the middle aged, a huge but often overlooked audience for this type of book. Highly recommended for all public libraries.-Susan B. Self Healing Reiki or Eldercare 911

Self-Healing Reiki: Freeing the Symbols, Attunements, and Techniques

Author: Barbara Emerson

Reiki is a Japanese hands-on method of bodywork that channels energy through seven chakras (energy centers) to attune the body to its optimal energy level. In Self-Healing Reiki, Barbara Emerson helps readers bypass the expensive—and some say elitist—process of working with a master by teaching themselves through a simple but complete set of exercises. Emerson divides the book into three areas of focus. In the first part, she introduces Reiki philosophy and techniques, showing hand positions for the unobstructed flow of energy and methods for performing a healing session on oneself and others. In the second part, she explores the spirituality in energy and healing, detailing her own system of “bare-bones Reiki” that allows the user to resist religious dogma and ideals. In the third part, she explains techniques for living as a master and transmitting the teachings, stressing the physical, emotional, and mental balance needed to perform attunements on others.

Eldercare 911: The Caregiver's Complete Handbook for Making Decisions

Author: Susan Beerman

Publishers Weekly hailed the first edition of Eldercare 911 as an "excellent, comprehensive guidebook." Today it continues to be the best "how to" book on the market for anyone facing the challenges of caring for an elderly loved one. Now this revised, updated, and expanded edition will offer the best step-by-step recommendations for over 200 situations, providing even the most experienced family caregivers as well as professionals with invaluable new insights and guidance for managing eldercare needs. Through a wealth of concrete new and updated information and practical, easy-to-follow solutions to nearly every problem, the message throughout is "You are not alone."
These eldercare consultants have also added crucial new chapters on:

How to Protect Yourself from "Toxic" Relatives
Learn how to survive the negative impact of know-it-alls, guilt trippers, parents in denial, and disappointers.
Aging in Place
Step-by-step recommendations to make remaining in the home a safe option, including insights into evaluating parents' physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs.
Working Caregivers: A Balancing Act
Reduce stress and maximize time by learning how to prioritize conflicting responsibilities.
In Case of an Emergency
Learn how to prepare for unexpected problems and react without panic to reduce the stress of a variety of emergency situations.
Caregiver Voices
Caregivers share their wisdom to help others renew their strength and lighten their hearts.

With tip sheets that conclude each chapter and journal space for expressing thoughts, Eldercare911 helps caregivers face reality with support and encouragement while reminding them: "When you've done the best you can, no one has the right to ask more of you."

Publishers Weekly

Beerman and Rappaport-Musson, eldercare specialists, offer a comprehensive guide to caregiving issues, calmly presenting information readers may not have even considered. For example, the first chapter addresses how to deal directly with one's parents, what to do if the parents don't want help and how to determine if parents, in fact, need help. The authors include sample dialogues, which will be particularly helpful with parents who refuse to acknowledge they need help. The section on long-distance caregiving is also quite useful-the authors advise readers to call ahead of time to schedule appointments with everyone connected to family care, from physicians to caregivers to support agencies. They also advise having a portable folder with key contact numbers so people will have essential information at their fingertips. This excellent, comprehensive guidebook offers information on nursing homes, hospice care and home heath professionals. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Discovering that older parents need assistance because of physical illness or frailty can seem like an emergency situation to the adult children who must arrange for their care. This handy guide covers a variety of caregiving situations, including those common to other caregiving books locating services, managing medications, understanding benefits, choosing a nursing home, coping with memory loss, and hiring and handling in-home help. But social worker Beerman and Rappaport-Musson, a certified senior adviser, address important topics not often covered elsewhere making the decision to become a caregiver (or deciding not to); helping a parent who refuses help; recognizing signs of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation; and recognizing drug or alcohol abuse. Writing primarily for women, who shoulder most caregiving responsibilities, the authors offer much supportive advice as well as anecdotes from other caregivers showing how to counteract the physical and emotional toll that caregiving responsibilities can exact. The concise chapters can be read as needed. Unfortunately, the scanty resource list includes only major government and disease-specific web sites, and readers looking for in-depth details on specific disorders, caregiving skills, or benefit programs will need to consult Linda Colvin Rhodes's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Caring for Aging Parents, American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving, or Consumer Reports Guide to Health Services for Seniors. Nevertheless, this is a good addition to larger senior health collections. Karen McNally Bensing, Benjamin Rose Lib., Cleveland Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
