Reviewer: Brent S.E. Rich, M.D., ATC (University Sports Medicine)
Description: This book attempts to provide health professionals with a "one-reference" guide to the nuances of disordered eating. It accomplishes that goal in providing an exceptional reference to this difficult topic.
Purpose: The purpose is to define the various conditions of disordered eating, update scientific references, provide treatment recommendations, and supply questionnaires and screening instruments that health professionals may use and modify for their own treatment and interaction with eating disorder patients. The book accomplishes these objectives.
Audience: The book is written for health professionals who work with eating disorder clients. It can be used by athletic trainers, nutritionists, psychologists, physicians, or any other sports medicine specialists. The author is a profession of nutrition and has worked at the intercollegiate level. She is a registered dietitian and a competitive athlete. She belongs to a number of recognized organizations and is highly qualified in this field.
Features: The author defines the various disordered eating entities, explains the effects that they have on the individual, and reports treatment recommendations. I was especially impressed with the inclusion of questionnaires, screening instruments and other assessment tools that have been successful in other settings. This enables the reader to use those resources. Case studies are included to validate her examples.
Assessment: I was impressed with the quality of the book. It provides a great resource to those who treat and interact with individuals with disordered eating. Though geared towards athletes, the concepts can be adapted to anyone with eating disorders. There is some overlap of ideas in the various chapters that makes for repetition, but it seems reasonable when viewed in a comprehensive fashion. This is a valuable resource for any health professional who treats this difficult patient population.
