Description:In this updated edition, the prevention, assessment, and management of sports-related injuries specific to each joint are reviewed and explained with a focus on educating athletic training students.
Purpose:The authors' purpose is to present a comprehensive review of prevention, assessment, and management of athletes. Secondly, the authors strive to incorporate the Role Delineation Study for athletic training in each chapter. Finally, the authors attempt to change the presentation from the previous edition by incorporating a more extensive color scheme throughout the book. The authors have successfully achieved all three of their goals.
Audience:The book is directed towards undergraduate students working in the field of athletic training. It could also be used and helpful in serving as an informative resource for physical therapists and others working in a sports medicine setting.
Features:This is an overview of several areas pertaining to athletic training such as prevention, assessment, and management of athletic related injuries. The addition of color for depictions of muscular/ligamentous anatomy, special tests, and specific injuries add to the strengths of this book. Furthermore, the authors have added new Role Delineation Study Board of Certification (BOC) competencies at the beginning of each chapter. Each chapter presents the anatomy of the joint, prevention of related injuries, joint injury assessment with signs and symptoms, management of each injury, along with practical case studies.
Assessment:This book challenges others in thefoundations of athletic training due to the new BOC competencies that are placed in each chapter. Its extensive glossary and index allows for further explanation for students. As an educator, I do think that a newer edition was needed, especially with the addition of the BOC competencies and color depictions. I would readily use this as a textbook for my course.
